School admissions

The application process for children to start school in September 2011 or to transfer to Year 3 Junior or Year 7 Secondary will be starting soon. Admission policies and starting school brochures will be available soon from the links on the left of this page.

Admission to Reception class September 2011

To start school in September 2011, your child must be born on or between 1 September 2006 and 31 August 2007. The law says that a child must start school no later than the beginning of the term following his or her fifth birthday. In Southampton four year olds can attend a reception class (Year R) in the September of the school year in which they become five.

You can apply online from 1 September 2010 and further information on the application process will be available on this site later in August. The closing date for applications is 15 January 2011.

Transfer to Junior School - September 2011

You can apply online from 1 September 2010. The closing date for applications is 15 January 2011.

Transfer to Secondary School – September 2011

You can apply online from 1 September 2010. The closing date for applications is 31 October 2010.

Applying for a school place FAQs

1. How do I apply for a school place?

Applications for a school place can be made online every September for all children either starting school (Year R), or transferring to Junior school (Year 3) or Secondary school (Year 7).

For all children starting school in the 2011-12 academic year, applications can be made online from 1 September 2010.

Paper applications are also accepted. Southampton residents with children of the correct age should collect an application form from any Southampton Infant or Primary school and return the completed form to the school in a sealed envelope.

2. What is the closing date for applications to Year R and Junior schools?

The closing date for children starting school in 2011-12 in Reception Class (Year R) and Junior school (Year 3) is 15 January 2011.

3. What is the closing date for applications to Secondary schools?

The closing date for children starting Secondary school in 2011-12 is 31 October 2010.

4. I have just moved to Southampton, how do I apply for a school place for my child?

If your child is new to the city, please contact Customer Services on 023 8083 3004 and ask for an application form. They will also be able to answer any questions you have.

5. I am unhappy with my child's current school, how can I transfer them to another school?

If your child is experiencing problems at his or her current school, you should first contact your child's teacher, head of year or head teacher. They will be able to discuss the issues your child is experiencing and attempt to resolve the situation.

If you wish your child to transfer to another school you should complete an in-year application form, which is available from your child’s current school. They will stamp the form and send it to the Admissions Team for you.
